Topic

The U.S. government should be allowed to monitor citizen's phone calls, e-mails, and web browsing without a warrant.

The topic for a Philosophical Chairs activity is always a statement. Participants in the activity begin by choosing one of three viewpoints on this topic:

  1. I agree, because...
  2. I disagree, because...
  3. I am undecided, because...

Research

Students will need to research some information before discussing the topic in class. There are some articles and readings provided for you. You will also need to find your own information.

Readings / Articles

The 4th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. In your own words, write a short 1-2 sentence explanation of the 4th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

The Patriot Act: Key Controversies.

Here is the Pro-NSA Surveillance Argument.

You need to find one additional article to read and summarize.

Once you have read both articles you will write a one paragraph summary for each article. Answer at least the following:

  1. Describe the most important person, place, or thing in this article.
  2. What was the main idea of this article?
  3. What is one question you would ask the author of this article?

Due Dates

Your summaries are due by October 25, 2018 at the end of class.

The discussions will take place in small groups starting the week of October 29, 2018.

[Let's Play] Puzzle Games: Tetris

Background

Gaming and game design is one of the most important standards for ICT-3. Designing high quality games requires that you play games too! For this assignment, students will have some time to play one of the greatest games of all time: Tetris. Tetris is a title-matching game featuring "tetrominoes" which are all of the possible shapes you can create out of four connected blocks. The blocks are selected randomly and fall from the top of the screen.

The player must move and rotate each piece to complete solid lines across game board. Each time a line is finished, it disappears and all of the pieces drop. The more lines completed at once the more points you get. The goal is to score a "Tetris" in which four lines are completed at once. As the game progresses, the pieces fall at faster rates. If any piece touches the top of the game board, the game is over.

You can read more about Tetris by clicking this link to open Wikipedia. You will need this information to complete some of the pre-play questions.

This is an interesting video on the history of Tetris. Feel free to watch it if you want but it is not necessary to answer the questions.

Pre-Play Questions [10 Points] Due October 18, 2018

Please answer the following questions in your journal. Label this assignment "Pre-Play: Tetris". Write in complete sentences.

  1. Tetris is considered a tile-matching puzzle game. What are some of the features or characteristics of this type of game?
  2. What skills do games like this require to do well?
  3. Do you think you will do well at this type of game? Explain why or why not.
  4. Of the following, which describes your gaming experience: Not a Gamer, Casual Gamer, Hardcore Gamer? Explain why.

Playing the Game

Students will play for 10 minutes each. The controls are as follows:

  1. The control pad will move the pieces left or right on the board.
    • Holding down on the control pad will cause pieces to drop faster!
  2. The A and B buttons will cause the pieces to rotate clockwise or counter-clockwise.
  3. Fill in complete lines across the bottom of the board. The more lines you can complete at once the more points you will score.

Post-Play Questions [10 Points] Due October 26, 2018

  1. Write down your highest score at the end of your play time.
  2. Did you enjoy the game? Why or why not?
  3. Was the game easy to play? Did the controls make sense? Did you understand the point of the game?
  4. What features stood out, good or bad, such as graphics, multiplayer experience, sound, or the challenge?
  5. Would you want to play this game again? Why or why not?
  6. Do you think the content of this game was appropriate for your age group? Why or why not?
