[Let's Play] Adventure Games: Another World 20th Anniversary Edition

Background

Gaming and game design is one of the most important standards for ICT-3. Designing high quality games requires that you play games too! For this assignment, students will have some time to play a class adventure game: Another World. The version you will play in class is a remastered 20th Anniversary Edition.

In this game, you are a scientist that is teleported to an alien world. You must escape dangerous creatures, deadly falls, and the aliens themselves. This game requires a combination of combat skills, jumping and timing, and some creative thinking. Generally, one hit from an enemy will kill you. Another World is considered one of the most challenging adventure games created.

For more information please check out the Another World homepage.

Pre-Play Questions [5 Points]

Please answer the following questions in your journal. Label this assignment "Pre-Play: Another World". Write in complete sentences.

  1. Have you played any adventure games before? If yes, which games? If no, why not?
  2. Use a search engine to identify at least three characteristics of adventure games.
  3. Do you enjoy solving puzzles and thinking logically? Why or why not?
  4. Do you enjoy games that require quick thinking and fast reflexes? Why or why not?

Playing the Game

Students will play individually. Students will have 30 minutes to play the game today.

Before playing:

  1. Students should use headphones while playing.
  2. Take a deep breath and relax. This game is extremely difficult.

During the game:

  1. Avoid the traps, creatures, and other obstacles.
  2. Sometimes it is better to run away than to try and fight.
  3. When you are stuck, think about what you would do in those situations. There is usually a different way around obstacles and puzzles.
  4. Sometimes you just have to jump for it.

  1. Did you enjoy the game? Why or why not?
  2. Did this game have any of the adventure game characteristics you found in the pre-play questions? If yes, which ones?

  4. What features stood out, good or bad, such as graphics, multiplayer experience, sound, or the challenge?
  5. Would you want to play this game again? Why or why not?
  6. Do you think the content of this game was appropriate for your age group? Why or why not?
