[Let's Play] Doom II

Background

Gaming and game design is one of the most important standards for ICT-3. Designing high quality games requires that you play games too! For this assignment, students will have some time to play one of the greatest computer games of all time: Doom 2.

Doom 2 was originally released in 1994 for the PC. At the time, it was the pinnacle of computer graphics and technical achievement. It supported 4-player multiplayer via local network (LAN) and also supported 2-player play via modem. Doom 2 was later released on Xbox Live Arcade, the Apple iPhone, and numerous other systems. Doom 2 has sold at least 1.5 million copies, most likely more than 2 million when counting all of the various systems.

Pre-Play Questions [3 Points]

Please answer the following questions in your journal. Label this assignment "Pre-Play: Doom II". Write in complete sentences.

  1. Have you played any first-person games before? If yes, which games? If no, why not?
  2. What features are important to you for a game, such as a graphics, multiplayer, sound, or the challenge?
  3. Of the following, which describes your gaming experience: Not a Gamer, Casual Gamer, Hardcore Gamer?

Playing the Game

Students will play in groups of four at a time. You will try two game play modes:

  1. Co-operative. The players work together to finish the levels and defeat enemies.
  2. Deathmatch. Players will compete against each other to defeat the other players.
In both modes, players need to navigate the map to find weapons and items such as power-ups or health packs. There are secrets hidden in each level that can sometimes provide bonus items or shortcuts through the map.

Post-Play Questions [3 Points]

  1. Did you enjoy the game? Why or why not?
  2. Was the game easy to play? Did the controls make sense? Did you understand the point of the game?
  3. What features stood out, good or bad, such as graphics, multiplayer experience, sound, or the challenge?
  4. Would you want to play this game again? Why or why not?
  5. Do you think the content of this game was appropriate for your age group? Why or why not?
